to be locked out

A: I was locked out of my apartment last night.
B: How did that happen? Did you leave your keys somewhere?
A: No. I came home and found a sign on the door saying that the owner had changed the locks.
B: Well, how did you get in?
A: I had to go to the rental office and pick up my new keys.
B: What an inconvenience! They should have given you notice ahead of time.
A: Did you go back to the office last night after dinner?
B: Yes, but I was locked out so I went right home.
